Inside Cultiply: A Conversation on Bioprocess Innovation

Cultiply is a specialized biotechnology company dedicated to industrial microbiology and fermentation technologies for biological processes. This company is focused on offering a complete innovation platform, from the idea phase to industrial scaling.

You offer customized solutions for your clients. How do you adapt and develop your work to meet the requirements of each project?

At Cultiply, we believe that every project is unique. Our approach begins with understanding our client’s needs in depth—whether they are aiming for novel microbial strain development, scale-up of fermentation processes, or optimization of an existing production. We combine scientific expertise with industrial know-how to design tailored strategies, from lab-scale experiments through to pilot and industrial implementation. This flexibility, together with close collaboration with our clients, allows us to deliver solutions that are both technically sound and commercially viable.

Innovation is a key part of your activity. How important are your facilities and equipment in this regard?

Our facilities are designed to serve as an integrated platform for innovation. We operate modern laboratories, pilot-scale bioreactors, and our recently opened industrial fermentation plant of up to 1,000L. This allows us to test, validate, and scale processes under controlled conditions that reflect real industrial environments. Having access to this infrastructure ensures faster development cycles, reduces technical risks, and enables us to bring innovative microbial solutions to market with greater efficiency.

With more than 20 years of experience in the sector, you have a strong foundation for taking on new projects and diversifying your work areas. Could you describe them?

Our team has extensive experience across multiple sectors, including food, agriculture, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Currently, we are expanding our activity into areas such as microbial-based biostimulants and biocontrol for sustainable agriculture, probiotics and postbiotics for animal and human health, and novel food biomass for functional ingredients. This diversification is a natural evolution of our capabilities and reflects our vision to use industrial microbiology as a driver for innovation across industries.

What other types of services are included in your professional activity?

Beyond strain development and fermentation scale-up, we provide services in strain isolation and characterization, media development, process optimization, downstream processing. With the help of our partners we also assist our clients with due diligence for investments, techno-economic assessments, and compliance with international frameworks such as the Nagoya Protocol and EU Novel Food regulations. In addition, we collaborate on bioprospecting projects, always ensuring that research and commercial activities follow ethical and legal standards.

Do you also work on the design of bioreactors?

Absolutely. Thanks to the knowledge we generate during process development and scale-up, we are able to design, conceptualize, and even build tailor-made bioreactors and complete bioprocess plants. This capability allows us to close the innovation cycle—from strain and process development to full industrial implementation, offering our clients a true 360º solution. In this way, we not only optimize the biology, but also ensure that the equipment and infrastructure are perfectly aligned with the production goals.
